Page #4 of 'The Lonely' comic i'm working on at the mo, which is keeping me pretty damn busy along with another 8 pager!

Atula Siriwadane ([link]) did the kick ass pencils and inks, in his superb style, classic work.

I laid down the colours, trying to get a style together for it all that compliments the lines. This series of pages with Mitchell the amputee (!!!!!... dont know the story!) was all set in his dank and dusty flat, so I was going with a desaturated feel for this, keeping the griminess with a few textures.

Hope you all dig! Sorry to be away so long :D

I don't know much about colouring, so ignore me if I'm making an arse out of myself, but have you thought about making Mitchell's skin slightly bluer, or at least paler? I think it would make him look lonelier, more pathetic. You'd probalby have to re-colour the rest of the room for balance, though :)

I know what you mean, and to be honest its a little more desaturated and paler in my CMYK version which will be going to print! I'm torn which is better. My editor noted this and said the same, he likes both. Its in his hands, but he'll be getting both version anyway. I tried to keep the colours changing a little over the pages with different light sources, so the skin colour changes a little with each panel. In contrast to the other characters he's definitely the pastiest though... I'll post up some more pages soon for ya to have a look at :D

Nice palette for a very gripping splash page. I've got two critiques, though. If you were going to use green, maybe you should have made the mag underneath Mitch a different colour so that the Playboy poster on the wall and the fabric on the fridge and the jar of Nutella(?) lead the eye into and out of the page like sign posts. The green does draw the eye and my initial thought was, it stands out.

The background buildings could have used some colour; as they are on the plain white, it doesn't look complete. Maybe tweak it to a dusky or sunset orange? A really muted but light orange, maybe a sepia? Or ambiance from the sky or street or atmospheric perspective in the way of grads?

And the detail on Mitchell is amazing. Love his face and marshmallow like skin. And the texture on the shirt goes well with it. All around brilliant page, man.

Thanks man, and for the crit. As for the green, subconcious colour choice on my part, I felt it gave the page that mouldy feel along with the dust, I may have got lazy on that mag haha. I agree with the buildings though totally, I may go back and see if I can change that up a bit (the client actually really liked it that way and commented on it!!!!), whilst I was doing it, it looked more late afternoon with an orange hue... I swear PS adds a tiny bit of saturation/contrast!!!! Glad you noted the bloated, sticky skin of Mitchell... I dont know his story, but from later panels you get the feel that he's quite a proud man (and ashamed) despite his handicap and size... so I assumed he would be a very clean guy, showering alot anyway in spite of his grimy flat (one armed dusting must suck!) :D

Those last seven words are so completely alien to my grammar lexicon, I think you must be French! Honestly, I don't know what that means, but it sounds cool nonetheless.
