Scarlet Spider - Senseless Violence (cover recreation)

I recently got this awesome little commission from a fellow named Roly, great guy, of a cover recreation based on the Vol 5 cover of Peter Parker: Spider-Man - Senseless Violence. Originally drawn by none other than John Romita Jr (perhaps my all time fave comic penciller), and coloured by Studio F (I have no idea which member, let me know if you do). Info on the issue and the original cover are here...

Roly got the cover redone by Marvel's very own cover artist and cover recreation specialist John Watson.... but with this awesome Scarlet Spider (Kaine) twist. I was handed the original cover as a ref along with a Scarlet Spider cover, so decided to mimic the original and do another small variation version influenced by the colour scheme from the Scarlet Spider cover I was given, which just so happens to be this cover...

Lines by John Watson, you can check out his website here...

Colours by me, 2099!

I never get enough Spider-Man commissions, but when I do, they are always awesome! Big thanks to Roly for that :D

Hope you guys like it.

Rad!

V2 is here...

Thanks man, I prefer the detail in the colours of this one and how close it is to the original, and the simple red/green of the other one. Its a tough call ;)

Is his surname actually Parker? :L

Cause in issue 3, the woman goes 'Whats your name?'
And he's like 'My name is Kane'
'Do you have a second name?'
'It's just Kane'
'So your name is Kane Kane? I'd hate to ask what your middle name is...'

He's a clone of Peter Parker, so his family name would unofficially be Parker yes (he has the blood of the Parker family), if he even had a birth certificate. But he had a hatred of Peter back in the day so I assume he still hates the name. Also, this cover is a homage of the original title which was 'Peter Parker:Spider-Man', so it had to be kept for this image I think for the homage to work all the better and for the font to fit so nicely across the top of the image... Kaine would have fit very badly as a single word in the composition.

Ah, I get it! That makes sense :D
And somehow 'Kaine Kaine' might not work so well either :P
Good work though! I really like your style! ^^

Thanks very much, glad you like the work :D You should go back and read the Clone Saga to get the background on Kaine... he was a mean little bugger when he first arrived in the Marvel Universe.

Yeah, I heard about that... but I also heard that the whole 90's Clone Saga was all messed up and confusing, especially the Spider Island series.. so I never did give it a look :L

Its not that confusing really, it introduced some great characters (the original Scarlet Spider (Ben Reilly), and Kaine) and had some neat twists... people just aren't very happy with change and this changed ALOT in the Spider-Man world at the time, well worth a read if you're a real Spider-Man fan ;)

I think the trade's for the whole thing are pretty cheap now as they were re-released again... there's alot of reading in it though, I have 4 really thick trades of the Saga, must be at least 40 issues by the looks of it with all the side stories and things and then the spin offs for Scarlet Spider across the Spider titles that were out at the time (Amazing, Spectactular, Web of)... and then you have the whole thing of when Ben Reilly took over as the official Spider-Man and ditched being Scarlet, this eventually spins out into the Symbiote Saga with Venom and Carnage (of which Venom then got his own mini-series, 3 or 4 of them in a row, each of about 4-6 issues). Its a big old chunk of reading... basically the whole 90's actually haha!

It looks great! I love Scarlet Sider's outfit. Seems like every Spider character gets better designs than our friendly neighborhood, these days. Hoping they'll maybe tweak it around, after the movie comes out. It sticks within the lines of the classic costume, but at the same time it's newer and fresh, by comparison - just a personal opinion ;)

Thanks. I'm actually the opposite with the costumes... I prefer the old Scarlet Spider costume to the new one, just always liked that hoodie, but its a different Scarlet Spider now, so its a moot point on my behalf. As for the movie costume... I want to burn it. I hate the edging and panelling they used, reminds me of when Blade went all Tribal in Blade III. The sneakers he's wearing are shite, and the logo doesn't do it for me! I thought it would grow on me, but it hasn't sadly. People are liking it though, so hopefully the film works out... I wont be seeing it till it hits dvd I don't think, we'll see. I still class Raimi's version as nigh on perfect for a depiction of Spider-Man's world (minus some of the casting choices).

I wish they'd kept the Iron Spider costume actually, that had some life in it and could have gone a bit further than it did.
