Commando Snake Eyes

A colour commission from Robert :iconratkins: over his full body Commando Snake Eyes, something I know he's wanted to get round to since he started the whole G.I.Joe marathon... but when he did get to doing it, he did it right! I was really looking forward to getting to colour it myself, the only time I ever got to work over Commando Snake Eyes was on the cover of Snake Eyes #7, and that was only a bust shot!

Colours by me, 2099! :D

I used a tweaked variation of the original card art. Softer approach to the bg colours, but keeping that mild olive green tinge to Snake Eyes overall (gives that slight commando feel to the black and grey I find, and helps lift it off the bg a bit more).

The combination of you and Atkins makes this remarkable. I will always prefer SE in his commando gear vs his ninja gear (not that I don't like it).

Classic 1st gen Snakeyes look before he went all 'ninja'. This is my favorite stage for him.

I hated it at first, but when I worked on this, I found the love... now its one of my all time faves for him too (although I like his recent look Robert and I worked on for the book, nice update and some cool new weapon designs).

but that's his first true iteration as far as his release as an action figure, which is why I love it. It's also what an actual soldier would wear rather than a skin-tight spandex whatever they've got him in now. He looks like a soldier, which is what he is.

Yeah, they definitely push the Ninja side now for popularity in the mainstream, but Robert likes to try and get as much soldier in there as he can... he'll never drop the cargo pants and go full spandex like some artists do!

thank God. I haven't followed the Joes since I was a kid (a long time ago) but they are SOLDIERS, right? Since when did everyone become a ninja? I know Snakeyes has an affiliation with Storm Shadow and he was from a ninja family, but now it seems everyone is a ninja. Zartan is a ninja, Firefly (my all time fav) is a ninja, Snakeyes is a ninja, Scarlet is a ninja, Batman is a ninja, Cobra Commander's old grocery clerk is a ninja...

When everyone is a ninja, it makes ninjas not all that interesting. I like the mystery better than knowing everything about them.

Haha, its not quite that bad, but for a while it did go pretty wild with that whole Ninja theme :D Calming down a little now thankfully, focusing on the Arashikage as the sole ninja part, and leaving the rest as soldiers. Actually the new re-boot doesn't even have Snake Eyes in it I don't think.
